Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin. At West-Med The Sanctuary in Somerset West, our doctors perform circumcision for men and for boys from 3 years old, for medical or religious reasons. Every procedure starts with a consultation, so you understand what is involved, the risks and the recovery before you decide.

Who we can help

• Men and teenage boys: the procedure is done in our procedure room under anaesthesia.
• Boys aged 3 and older: done in our rooms under sedation, so your child is comfortable and still throughout.
• Babies and children under 3: we refer to a trusted colleague. Call us and we will point you in the right direction.

Reasons for circumcision

We perform circumcision for medical or religious reasons only.

• Medical: phimosis (a tight foreskin that cannot be pulled back), paraphimosis, recurrent infection or inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis, and other foreskin conditions your doctor identifies.
• Religious: where circumcision forms part of your family's religious practice.

For boys, South African law sets out who may consent and when circumcision may be done. We explain this at the consultation and make sure the right consent is in place before any procedure.

What to expect

1. Consultation: your doctor assesses you or your son, explains the procedure, anaesthesia or sedation, risks and recovery, and takes informed consent.
2. The procedure: done in our sterile procedure room at The Sanctuary. For children, we give you preparation instructions beforehand, including when your child should stop eating and drinking.
3. Aftercare: clear written instructions on wound care, hygiene, pain relief and activity, with a follow-up visit if needed.
4. Recovery: some discomfort and swelling is normal for the first days. Your doctor will tell you when you or your son can return to work, school, sport and, for adults, sexual activity.
